4.3: HYBRIDIZATION - showing hybridization process in formation of sigma bonds

 IDENTIFY THE PROCESS OF HYBRIDIZATION

Chart 1: Process of identifying hybridization of molecule

Table 1: Table of Hybridization Process in determining the hybrid of molecule

Here, I will show the correct  way in determining the type of hybridization from the Lewis structure. This is a process that you can show systematically in table.

EXAMPLE 1(NEUTRAL MOLECULE, BeH2)
STEP 1

STEP 2

STEP 3
This step is to indicate the shape of type of hybrid that needs to be drawn for BeH2. The shape of hybrid depending on the molecular geometry of its molecule.

STEP 4
In STEP 4, you must know the number of valence electrons & the period of central atom. It is because to write the partial orbital diagram with correct label.

STEP 5
If you can that the sp hybrid orbital of Be is drawn exactly like its molecular geometry (LINEAR)

STEP 6
The last step is the explanation of the sigma bonds formation in BeH2

EXAMPLE 2 (NEUTRAL MOLECULE, XeF2)
STEP 1

STEP 2

STEP 3

This step is to indicate the shape of type of hybrid that needs to be drawn for XeF2. The shape of hybrid depending on the molecular geometry of its molecule.

STEP 4
In STEP 4, you must know the number of valence electrons & the period of central atom. It is because to write the partial orbital diagram with correct label.

STEP 5
If you can that the sp hybrid orbital of Xe is drawn exactly like its molecular geometry (LINEAR)

STEP 6
The last step is the explanation of the sigma bonds formation in XeF2

EXAMPLE 3 (IONS, ClF2+)
STEP 1

STEP 2

STEP 3
This step is to indicate the shape of type of hybrid that needs to be drawn for ClF2 +. The shape of hybrid depending on the molecular geometry of its molecule.

STEP 4
In STEP 4, you must know the number of valence electrons & the period of central atom. It is because to write the partial orbital diagram with correct label.

STEP 5
If you can that the sp hybrid orbital of Cl is drawn exactly like its molecular geometry (BENT)

STEP 6
The last step is the explanation of the sigma bonds formation in ClF2 +.
